Creative Arts have always been a part of school life at GESS and we love showcasing our students’ manifold talents through picture galleries, music and theater nights. In his new role as Head of Creative Arts, Terry Moran shared what else we can expect for our Arts programmes in the months to come.

Tell us a bit more about your role as Head of Creative Arts: What is your main responsibility in this role and which departments and teams do you look after?

As the Head of Creative Arts, my primary responsibility is overseeing all arts disciplines at GESS, including visual arts, music, and drama. I provide guidance and support to various departments and teams within the Creative Arts domain, ensuring that our students have access to a well-rounded and enriching arts education.

What are your plans for the coming months and years?

Looking ahead in the coming months and years, I have ambitious plans to further enhance the visibility of the Creative Arts program at GESS. This includes expanding opportunities to display student artworks and working with exciting events that showcase our students’ talents and creativity in the drama and music arenas.

Building on the progress made at the end of the last academic year, I initiated plans for two distinct art galleries. The first, named “Brushstrokes Atelier,” is currently located in the admissions/front office area (B201) and already features 19 student artworks. The gallery is an ongoing project that will gradually expand over time. The second, the “Dieter Gumpert Atelier,” is set to be situated on level five, outside the Auditorium. From November onwards, the community will begin to witness a captivating array of student artworks within this gallery.

Additionally, we are taking steps to enhance the overall artistic atmosphere around the campus. The hallways leading to the Auditorium will be adorned with posters and photographs highlighting some of our more recent drama productions.

Furthermore, our plans extend beyond traditional gallery spaces. We are excited to announce that we have initiated the planning of student and community murals. Some of these captivating murals may even make their debut during the 2024 Christmas Market, adding an extra layer of artistic vibrancy to our campus. So stay tuned and keep a lookout for the next Paul Klee, Pablo Picasso or even a Banksy!

How does your work support our school commitment to limitless learning?

My work in the role of Head of Creative Arts aligns perfectly with our school’s commitment to limitless learning. By nurturing creativity, empathy, and critical thinking through the arts, the team is contributing to our student’s holistic development, empowering them to explore their full potential and pursue lifelong learning.

What is your favourite part about your new scope of work?

The most rewarding aspect of my new role is the opportunity to inspire and support students across a wide range of artistic disciplines. I find great satisfaction in witnessing our students’ growth and the positive impact that the arts can have on their personal and academic development.

Is there anything else you would like to share with the community?

I’d like to take this opportunity to express my excitement about the upcoming initiatives and events in the Creative Arts department. We have some fantastic projects in the pipeline, and I encourage the GESS community to join us in celebrating the incredible creativity and talent of our students. Together, we can continue to foster an environment that encourages artistic expression and imagination.
