As GESS Wildcats athletes, Konrad and Julian navigate the thrilling world of football, blending dedication and skill with the academics of school life. We dive into their perspective shedding light on the rigorous football training and matches and the camaraderie that defines the team.
Could you tell us a bit about yourself? How did your journey in football begin and when did you start playing for the Football Team at GESS?
Konrad: Hello, my name is Konrad Jasper, and I am 12 years old. I am currently in Grade 6 in the European Section at school. Although I am Danish by nationality, I was born in Singapore. My journey with football began in 2017 when I started playing for a Danish team here in Singapore. Later, I transitioned to Borussia Academic Singapore and joined the school’s CCA football team in Grade 1. Presently, I am part of the Island City FC. In February 2023, I began playing for the GESS team, an experience that I thoroughly enjoy. Additionally, I am a passionate supporter of Manchester United.
Julian: According to my mom, I began playing football at a very young age. My initial team was Sparta Praha in Prague, where we resided until relocating to Singapore in 2018. Upon moving here, I became a member of JSSL, and during my time there, our team clinched victory in the Puma Youth Champions League on three occasions. Additionally, we emerged victorious in tournaments held in Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, and Phuket. Ever since I was in Grade 6, I have been actively playing for GESS Wildcats.
What do you enjoy most about being part of the Football Team, both on and off the field?
Konrad: I enjoy delving deeper into football, and simultaneously engaging with my school friends through play. Our training sessions are filled with enjoyment, and during breaks, we eagerly participate in football matches on the field.
Julian: Playing with my friends on the Football Team is the best! Scoring goals, passing the ball, and celebrating victories together is a blast during the games. Outside the games, the camaraderie we develop is equally exciting as it strengthens our bond and allows us to share unforgettable experiences. Whether we’re preparing for upcoming matches, cheering one another on, or simply spending leisure time together, the profound connection we share is truly special. Being part of the Football Team isn’t solely about competing on the field; it’s about fostering meaningful friendships and cherishing collective moments, both on and off the field.
How would you describe the camaraderie within the Football Team?
Konrad: We have a great team; we share a strong bond of friendship. I believe we uphold mutual support and respect one another when we are playing matches – and also outside the field. I am lucky to play together with one of my best friends Thabo, we have known each other since Pre-primary.
Julian: The teamwork in our Football Team is really cool. We’re always helping each other out. During games we rally behind one another with encouragement. Moreover, outside of our matches, we enjoy spending time together, organising exciting activities. It’s more than just playing football; our Football Team is like a happy gang, and that’s what makes it super special!
How has being a student at GESS influenced your passion for football?
Konrad: GESS has a big sport section, noteworthy is the Wildcats team. I love the early Monday morning training sessions as it is so quiet at school. Despite feeling a bit tired, we always have a great time with Coach Gomez. The school matches against the other schools are also fun – and it makes me proud to represent GESS.
Julian: I really love that GESS has a football pitch right on campus. It’s awesome because we can play football without having to travel far. Whenever I’m in the mood to kick the ball around with my friends, we simply head to the pitch during breaks. Having it right here makes it super easy and a lot of fun. I think it’s one of the coolest things about our school!
How has being part of the team contributed to your personal growth and development as a student-athlete at GESS?
Konrad: Being a part of Wildcats Football Team means maintaining good behaviour, showing respect to my coaches and teachers, completing my homework diligently, and being a supportive friend.
Julian: Being on the Football Team helped me grow a lot. I really love playing football, and I’m always excited to learn new things. This has taught me to work hard and be disciplined, not just in football but also beyond the field. The team is like a big family, and it makes me feel more connected to GESS. Being on the team is not just about getting better at football; it’s about making friends, working together, and growing as a person.
Are there any upcoming competitions or matches that you are particularly looking forward to, and why?
Konrad: I’m excited about joining the ACSIS U12 league and representing the Wildcats. It is fun and sometimes a little scary to meet the other school teams. Nonetheless, I’m hopeful that we’ll emerge victorious in every match and deliver a strong performance. The Bangkok tournament is also coming up in May, it was fun last year.
Julian: I’m super excited about our upcoming games! We’ll be competing in Bangkok in May and participating the ACSIS league. I’m looking forward to giving our best as a team and having a lot of fun. These events are not just about winning; they’re about showing our school spirit and making great memories together!
How do you balance your academic commitments with your passion for football? Any tips for other students managing a busy schedule at GESS?
Konrad: My parents have told me that school comes first, followed by football. I dedicate five days a week to football training and play matches with my club on Sundays. With just one day off, I try to do as much homework as possible and relax. Sometimes I stay at school after classes to finish my homework before a match.
Julian: After football, I dedicate myself to studying late into the evening. I find this beneficial as it helps me maintain focus. For fellow GESS students juggling busy schedules, I’d say make a study plan, prioritize tasks, and communicate with teachers and teammates. Taking breaks and getting enough rest are important too. With a bit of planning, you can do well in both school and football.
How do you balance your academic commitments with your passion for football? Any tips for other students managing a busy schedule at GESS?
Konrad: I’m just happy and proud to be part of the school team, training alongside my school friends and Coach Gomez.
Julian: Being on the Wildcats Football Team is so much fun! I really enjoy playing with my teammates, and we have a great time both on and off the field. It’s not just about football; it’s also about making good friends.
