Carlos and Ashish met at GESS, and despite parting ways after their graduation in 2016, they have remained good friends to this day. Carlos is studying materials science in Kiel and Ashish is studying medicine in Heidelberg. As Carlos’ parents still live in Singapore, Ashish took the opportunity to visit his friend in Singapore. Together, they visited and admired the new GESS campus.

What are your fondest memories of your time at GESS?

Even though the buildings of the old GESS campus were not as modern as what we see here at the new premises, the Bukit Timah location next to the Swiss Club was great. A familiar and cosy campus where you quickly settled in and felt at home. Surrounded by the jungle, the occasional visit by monkeys did not go unnoticed. A particularly funny experience for us was when one of our classmates had the great idea to feed a monkey. He immediately fetched his friends and we ended up locked in our class, surrounded by monkeys outside just waiting for us to open the door and rush in to look for more food.

We shared sports facilities and the swimming pool with the Swiss Club at the time, and even though it wasn’t allowed, we sometimes arranged to have lunch at the Swiss Club. The relationship with our teachers was also particularly valuable. They were highly motivated, always there for us as contact persons, and took our concerns very seriously.

What do you miss most about your time at GESS and in Singapore?

Feeling safe was great. We could move around freely, everywhere, and without fear. When you came out of school, the weather and easy access to the beach made it feel like you were on holiday. The Swiss Club was a place where we always enjoyed spending time. The ride home on the school bus was also great for switching off and relaxing. Sometimes we miss the predefined school routine of 8am to 3pm, especially with university life being much more stressful today.

Did you have a favourite place in Singapore back then?

We loved two places in particular: Palawan Beach at Sentosa was “the place to be” for hanging out and partying. We also loved going to the hawker centre near school – food was cheap and delicious, and it allowed us to talk to locals and learn more about Singaporean culture.

How has your time at GESS and in Singapore shaped your future life?

We are much more open-minded and tolerant of other opinions and cultures. During our time in Singapore, we got to know so many different cultures, festivals, and nationalities that it is now easier for us to accept and respect other opinions. At the same time, we have deeper appreciation of our own culture. For example, German festivals such as Christmas were an integral part of our school life.

Also, we learned good basics in computers and IT, particularly useful when preparing presentations later at university.

Finally, do you have any advice for our students?

Enjoy your time in Singapore, which usually ends sooner than you think. Eat at hawker centres and experience local cuisine to learn more about Singaporean culture. Do things now and don’t wait for tomorrow!!!
